Every little rattle and squeak from your car can bring uneasiness to your drive. While we understand that aging cars come with a plethora of noises that may very well be normal, these noises can also be due to car issues that require immediate professional attention. This month on the blog we’re dishing the differences between common car noises and when to see your trusted mechanic.

SQUEAKING

If you find your car has begun to squeak, check these three places first:

•Brakes

•Serpentine Belt

•A/C Compressor

If your squeaking is coming from your brakes, the solution may be simple. You may be in need of new brake pads. If the noise is from under the hood, check for any issues with your serpentine belt. Often times when the belt is old, it begins to stiffen and/or crack which may cause the unpleasant squeaking sound. The serpentine belt helps to power many different engine parts, including the A/C Compressor. If the compressor isn’t working properly, it may add extra stress/tension to the belt which may also cause any unwelcomed squeaking.

KNOCKING

If you find your car has begun to knock, check these two places first:

            •Hydrolocked engine

            •Bent rod or piston

Have you driven through high water recently? If you have and the knocking sounds began shortly after, it may be because you hydrolocked your engine. See a trusted mechanic to get things back in order.

A prominent and repetitive knocking sound that comes directly from your engine will need to be taken to a mechanic immediately. There may be an issue with the pistons and/or rods in the engine, both essential parts to keeping your car going.

RATTLING

If you find your car has begun to rattle, check these two places first:

•Coins or other items hiding throughout the car

            •Loose car components, body parts

Rattling noises may be the most annoying of all. First check that all your loose change, empty cups/water bottles and belongings aren’t the culprits. The rattling may also be something more serious like a loosened car part, becoming unfixed from your vehicle. Perhaps your exhaust pipe is out of alignment and will need to be seen by a professional.

While we understand that not all car noises call for panic or professional repair, it’s helpful to be aware of any noises that seem a little out of the ordinary. Know your car, stay curious, and contact your trusted mechanic if you feel uncomfortable driving your vehicle. If the knocks and rattles are coming from above the hood, let us help you! Upload the damage right here to the website and we will respond with a quote as soon as we can. Mahalo!
