Even the most seasoned driver may be unraveled and frazzled after getting into an accident. This month we’re giving you our post-accident steps to help you limit the unnecessary worry and stress that comes from being involved in a car crash. It’s important to remember that stress and emotions are high at the time of a collision and that remaining calm is always a great place to start.
Step 1 – HEALTH CHECK
Check yourself, and then the other passengers, for any injuries. If anyone is injured, call 911. If possible, move you, your passengers and your vehicle out of the road. This will help to prevent any further harm and/or collisions. If someone in the vehicle is seriously injured, do not move and wait for emergency responders to arrive on the scene. Turn your engine off and turn your hazard lights on to warn other drivers to slow down.
Step 2 – CONTACT THE POLICE
Calling the police is important – and sometimes legally required – regardless if you’ve been involved in a minor collision or a major crash. The police report will be useful when filing your claim.
Step 3 – DOCUMENT EVERYTHING
Try to obtain any type of witness information, especially if you are at no fault. If your witness cannot wait for the police to arrive on the scene, exchange contact information with them and have them give their account at a later time. Take photos of the accident scene – photos of all the vehicles involved, license plates, damages, insurance cards and driver’s licenses are all key things to document.
Step 4 – EXCHANGE INFORMATION
If the police allow, exchange names, contact information, insurance information and license information with all the parties involved. You can never have too much information when it comes to filing a claim with your insurance.
Step 5 – CONTACT YOUR INSURER AND START A CLAIM
Regardless of who is at fault, it is very important to notify your insurance company as soon as you are able. Gather as much information as possible about the accident and call the number on your insurance card.
Car accidents are stressful for all parties involved. We hope these 5 steps make the post-crash process a little less chaotic for you and your passengers. Give our professionals a call if you find yourself in an unfortunate situation. We’d love to help you get back on the road quickly and safely.
